Countermeasures discussion with police on recent safety problem on the streets of Chinatown

Crimes such as street robbery recently in Los Angeles Chinatown, and theft breaking glass doors of Chinese restaurants at night have caused anxiety in the Chinatown community and worried about becoming the next victim. CCBA and Chinese Chamber of Commerce held a discussion on countermeasures with representatives of the Los Angeles Police Department at noon on June 24 to ensure the safety of the Chinatown community.

CCBA President Mei Lau, Vice President Ernest Lee, Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Chester Chong met with the Los Angeles Police Department Asian Liaison Officer Danny Chao, the Central District newly appointed Captain Jay Hom, the newly appointed Senior Captain Elaine Morales, to discuss the recent public insecurity and anxiety in Chinatown.

Recently appointed Los Angeles Police Department Senior Captain Morales and Central District Captain Jay Hom, visited Chinatown for the first time since taking office and met with community groups with friendly manner. Regarding the recent increase in crime in Chinatown, they promised to increase police car patrols.

Jay Hom, the captain of the Central District, said that he is a Chinese born in Chicago and also konws Cantonese. His parents came from Hong Kong. He is familiar with Los Angeles Chinatown. When he was young, he often went to Chinatown to watch movies and enjoyed dim sum. Today, he still comes to Chinatown to have dim sum and shopping. He has just been assigned to the Central District (including Chinatown) by the Los Angeles Police Department and will do his best to protect the people’s safety so that everyone can live and work in peace. He reminded the public that in the event of any crime, the first thing to do is to pay attention to personal safety and call the police quickly, so that the police have more information to make the arrest.

Mei Lau said that after discussion, the Los Angeles Police Department agreed to hold a crime seminar in the CCBA Auditorium from 2 pm to 4 pm on July 14 (Wednesday). The Los Angeles Police Department will send lead officers from sectors to discuss important subjects such as crime prevention, reporting cases; personal safety, road and traffic safety and Asian hate crimes, so that the public has more awareness. Attendees can ask questions.

Ernest Lee said that as the old saying goes, "prevent trouble before it happens." Everyone must unite and help each other to protect the rights of individuals and neighbors. He hopes that Chinatown residents and business representatives will actively attend the seminar and jointly safeguard the safety of the Chinatown community.
